I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada with a Trinidadian background.  I was always found to be doing one of two things- reading, and playing sports.  Outside of these things, being a Canadian Trinidadian, I was exposed to as much Trinidadian culture as one could possible absorb.  With that being said; Carnival was NEVER missed.  I have been participating in carnival festivities since the age of 2. 

 

Although I’ve been known to be your average Tom Boy; carnival has taken precedent and I would dabble in all things carnival related. The love for the music, colours, feathers, glitter and gems became second to none.  This of course included the elaborate carnival makeup. I had never been one to do my own makeup.  If friends didn’t do my makeup, no makeup was being worn at all. But one Toronto Caribanna a friend at the time said, “Tiffany would never learn to do this”….  Well, YouTube is one heck of a thing.

Playing Mas is definitely a confidence builder.  For 1 or 2 days, you are allowed to let your inner self shine BRIGHTLY for everyone to see, and I love being a part of something so beautiful.
